The Tetrahedron Outdoors Club http://tetoutdoor.weebly.com/index.html deserves our thanks. Not only do they maintain several fantastic cabins, but the trail was extremetly well cared for.
Though I'm not sure why so many of the signpost faces were removed (maybe they re-appear in Winter), the instructions in 103 6th edition plus the map from the Tetrahedon site were enough to get us where we needed to go.
This trip deserves a weekend. Why pay all that money for the ferry just to rush up and down a trail when you could stay in such a great cabin and also check out some of the sights on the Sunshine Coast?
The Mt Steel cabin is very well cared for and situated right at the scenic base of the last push to the peak (20 minutes from the top approximately). Views of Panther and Tetrahedron are right in your face, and though it was a very hazy day for us, we could see the ocean. I suspect on a crisp day you would be able to see UBC and the North Shore mountains. As it was the Tantalus range was still worth the effort.
We were treated to an amazing sunset right off the porch of the cabin.
This trail took us about 4 hours 1 way (with packs), and was only a moderate challenge. Well worth the effort given the wildflowers were out, and such a unique location. Don't get me wrong, this isn't like true alpine, but it is close to that and worth doing as an overnighter.
I look forward to some day doing this as a Winter trip also.
